Comparison

Notion alternative for personal notes: FixNote vs Notion

Notion shines when notes sit next to databases, tasks and a team wiki. FixNote is built for personal notes: they are encrypted on your device, and an assistant answers from them and edits them only when you agree. Here is how the two differ, including where Notion is the better pick.

Based on each vendor’s own site and help pages as of October 2026. A check means the app has the feature on at least one plan (Notion AI and AI Meeting Notes come with Notion Business). Price of the cheapest paid plan, billed monthly. Names and icons belong to their owners.

How to choose

  1. 1

Decide whose notes these are. If the notes belong to a team along with tasks, databases and shared pages, that is Notion's home turf. If they are your own thoughts, plans and drafts, a separate personal app is easier to live with.

  2. 2

Check who can read the text. Notion encrypts data on its servers but holds the keys. FixNote encrypts each note on your device, so the server only ever stores ciphertext.

  3. 3

Work out what the AI will cost. Notion Agent and AI Meeting Notes come with Business at $20 a month; Free and Plus get a limited trial. FixNote's assistant works for free with your own key or Ollama, and FixNote AI is part of Pro at $7.

  4. 4

Move one section first. Export one section from Notion as Markdown & CSV and open the archive in FixNote. A week of use will tell you whether plain notes are enough without databases.

AI and the assistant

Notion keeps its full AI in the Business plan. That covers Notion AI and Notion Agent, which answer questions from your pages with links to them and carry out multi-step tasks across your workspace and connected apps, and AI Meeting Notes, which records meetings in the desktop app and writes a summary. On Free and Plus you can only try these features.

FixNote’s assistant is there on every plan. It searches by words and by meaning, answers with links to your notes, writes new notes and moves them between folders. Each change appears as a diff; deleting, or changing more than a few notes at once, always asks first, and Settings → AI keeps a log where any change can be undone. On Free you plug in your own model key or Ollama; Pro adds FixNote AI, which needs no key. Inside a note you can select text and ask to rewrite or expand it.

Both apps can open your notes to Claude or Cursor over MCP. Notion’s server runs in its cloud. FixNote’s MCP server runs on your computer, costs nothing, and lets you pick which folders a client sees and whether it can write.

Privacy and encryption

Notion encrypts data in transit and on its servers (AES-256), but Notion holds the keys. Your pages can be decrypted on Notion’s side, and there is no end-to-end option where only you hold the key.

FixNote encrypts a note on your device before it is sent, and the server stores only ciphertext. The keys come from a 12-word phrase that never leaves your devices. The encryption page explains what the server does and doesn’t see. In Only on this device mode, FixNote doesn’t contact our server at all.

Platforms, offline and price

Notion runs in the browser and on Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android, and it always needs an account. Offline, its apps open only the pages you marked as available offline, and the browser version has no offline mode.

FixNote runs on Windows, macOS and in the browser, with no account required. Every note is stored on the device, so everything is available offline. Free costs nothing and never expires. Pro is $7 a month or $60 a year and adds sync, FixNote AI, shared notes and the Telegram bot. You can try Pro for 7 days without a card.

How to move your notes from Notion

  1. In Notion, open the menu of a page or of the workspace, choose Export and pick Markdown & CSV.
  2. In FixNote, open Settings → Data → Import notes and choose the .zip you got.
  3. Check what FixNote found: the number of notes, folders and images. CSV tables from databases are left out, and FixNote tells you how many there were.
  4. Click Import. If you don’t like the result, the whole import can be undone in one step.

FixNote also strips the long IDs Notion appends to file names. More on formats on the import and export page.

Why choose FixNote

  • Notes are encrypted on your device with keys derived from a 12-word phrase, so neither we nor anyone with access to the server can read them.
  • The assistant searches all your notes by meaning, answers with links to them, and creates or edits notes, showing every change as a diff you can undo.
  • Without Pro, the assistant runs on your own model key or Ollama on your computer, so you don't pay extra for AI.
  • Voice notes and call summaries are transcribed on your computer, and the audio never leaves it.
  • FixNote works without an account, and every note lives on the device, so all of them open offline.

When Notion still makes sense

  • Notion has databases with views, filters and relations; FixNote has nothing like them.
  • If your team already runs its wiki, projects and tasks in Notion, keeping personal notes next to them can be the simpler choice.
  • Notion has native iPhone and Android apps, while FixNote runs on a phone only as a web app in the browser.
  • If your team already pays for Business, Notion AI answers from the whole workspace and AI Meeting Notes summarizes calls, so a second app adds little for work notes.

Verdict

For team work built on databases and a shared wiki, Notion is still the stronger tool. For personal notes that need to stay private, FixNote gives you end-to-end encryption and an assistant without a Business plan. Plenty of people keep both: Notion for the team, FixNote for themselves.

Questions

Does Notion have end-to-end encryption?
No. Notion encrypts data in transit and at rest (AES-256), but Notion holds the keys. In FixNote, notes are encrypted on your device and only you have the key.
Can I import my Notion pages into FixNote?
Yes. Export your pages from Notion as Markdown & CSV, then in FixNote open Settings → Data → Import notes and pick the .zip. Pages become notes with their folders, dates and images.
How much does Notion AI cost?
Notion Agent and AI Meeting Notes are included in the Business plan at $20 per member per month. Free and Plus get a limited AI trial.
Does FixNote work offline?
Yes. All notes are stored on the device, so you can write, search and dictate without a connection. Sync catches up once you are back online.
Is there a FixNote app for iPhone or Android?
Not a native one. On a phone FixNote opens in the browser as a web app; on a computer there are apps for Windows and macOS.
